The School of Arts & Humanities presents a high-quality two-day jazz festival, centered on the historical elements of jazz in the Dallas area. The “Texas Tenor” style of saxophone playing describes a player with a very “big” sound playing a somewhat blues-oriented style. Buster Smith is said to have pioneered the style by playing his tenor with a baritone sax reed, thereby giving him a bigger sound. Texas saxophonists associated with the “Texas Tenor Sound” include Buster Smith, David “Fathead” Newman, James Clay, Booker Ervin, John Hardee, King Curtis, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb and Marchel Ivery. The Woody Herman Orchestra, directed byFrank Tiberi will headline the concert Friday night. The Texas Instruments Jazz Band, directed by Paul Westbrook, will open. On Saturday night, Young Texas Tenor saxophonists from Dallas/Ft. Worth will open for one of Texas’ most famous tenor saxophonists, David “Fathead” Newman, with local sidemen.
Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, features the Woody Herman Orchestra with the opening act of the Texas Instruments Jazz Band.
About the Woody Herman Orchestra
The Woody Herman Orchestra of today maintains the youthful vitality and versatility that characterized it in years past, mixing classics from the Herman Bands of old with new charts arranged to suit the band's exuberant, hard swinging style. It is pure entertainment from the first dance to the last.
Most members playing these exciting tunes played under Woody Herman himself. Throughout the years Woody kept his music current and exciting. Never content with the glories of the past, he was always willing to explore new musical directions, incorporating bebop into the big band, adopting complex Coltrane numbers, and even moving into fusion of the '70's. His timeless ever-evolving style continues to win not only high critical acclaim and Grammy® awards, but also new fans of all ages and from every walk of life.
